Peanuts

The peanut or groundnut is a species in the family Fabaceae. The peanut was probably first domesticated and cultivated in the valleys of Paraguay. It is an annual herbaceous plant growing 30 to 50 cm tall. The leaves are  opposite, pinnate with four leaflets; each leaflet is 1 to 7 cm long and 1 to 3 cm across.

Botanical Name of Peanut is Arachis Hypogaea famous by its Indian name Mongphali. The groundnut belongs to the pea and bean family and is a leguma but is considered as nut because of its high nutrition value.The groundnut is the native of South America, where it has been cultivated for several countries. Peanut is the major oilseed of India.  Peanuts Production is highly weak to rainfall deviations and display huge fluctuation between years.

Varieties:

The main Groundnut varieties produced in India are Kadiri-2, Kadiri-3, BG-1, BG-2, Kuber , GAUG-1, GAUG-10, PG-1 , T-28, T-64, Chandra, Chitra, Kaushal, Parkash, Amber.

 

Areas of Cultivation:

Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu. Madhya Pradesh are the main production area in India.

Groundnut is exported to over 114 countries . In the year 2020-2021 (Apr-Nov), India has exported Groundnut worth of 87.27 USD million. The total volume of export in 2020-2021 (Apr-Nov) was around 252532879.

 

Major Export Destinations (2020-21) :

Indonesia, Vietnam Social Republic, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand.
